The term "content" comes from the media industry, where it refers to information that a reader, listener or viewer receives. In the web industry, it means the information, as opposed to design or navigation elements, that a website contains.

Web content can be in various formats, such as text, images, downloadable files, streaming video and audio files. For example, the content of a company website might include a location map, contact details, product photographs, promotional videos and downloadable annual reports.

Some content is "hidden" in the code of a web page, for example, page titles, keywords and other metadata.

Some websites have a built in content management system (CMS) that allows the person updating the content to do so without knowledge of programming techniques.
