The term content originates from the media industry and is used to describe the information that is distributed to the audience through various mediums. In the online industry, content generally refers to the information that is contained within a
website as opposed to the design or navigation elements.
Website content includes information in many formats, such as text,
images,
downloadable files, streaming video and audio files. For example, the content of a company website may include location, contact details, product information, company video, customer advice, news or events.
Some of the hidden information contained inside the code of a web page can also be referred to as content, for example, page titles,
keyword tags and
metadata.
When the information within a website requires modification, this is generally referred to as content management. Some websites have a built in
content management system (CMS) that allows the content manager to change the information via their web browser, without requiring knowledge of sophisticated programming techniques.
