A content inventory is a list, item by item, of
content on a current
website or content to be migrated to a website.
You can use a content inventory to understand and structure the classes of content your CMS needs to manage, to weed out duplicated and poor-quality content, and to manage content migration.
You might include the following details about each item of content in a content inventory
- a unique number, usually outline numbered to reflect hierarchical relationships between content items
- a descriptive name
- location, such as URL for content on an existing website
- content type, eg function, articles, link
- content format, eg PDF, Excel
- subject, topic or keywords
- owner
- status/quality – whether redundant, outdated or trivial (ROT)
- general comments
