An internal website, or collection of websites, available only to staff within an organisation. An Intranet uses Internet technology, but is unavailable to the public. Employees log in with a username and password.
An Intranet allows staff to share information, documents, calendars and other tools that enable collaboration on projects and assignments. It is especially useful for collaborating across geographical boundaries when an organisation has branches in various states or countries.
An Intranet can include software tools such as customer relationship management (CRM) systems, enterprise management systems (EMS), and document management systems (DMS).
Private websites for sharing information with customers or suppliers are Extranets.
