It's a process, not a project

Why good websites are never really finished

A business website should be a process, not a project. Understand the difference and you have one of the keys to making a return on your investment in your site.

A project is a one-off activity that achieves a particular objective. You complete it, cross it off your list and turn your attention to something else.

That is how some businesses regard their websites. When a site goes live, the people responsible breathe a sigh of relief. They have finished the project.

Afterwards, the website gets little or no attention. As a result, it is "out there" contributing little. Or worse, decay to the point where it does more harm than good.

A successful website is always a work in progress. Going live is just one step, not the final one.

Review your website at regular intervals. Make sure it is up to date and supporting your business objectives. Over time, your business grows and evolves. Your site should change with it.

Make someone accountable for the quality and effectiveness of your website. Give them the time and budget to do the job properly.

If managing and maintaining your website is not an ongoing activity, perhaps you would be better off without it.
