Your website team

Your website might involve a number of people

The specific roles below are typical of large website projects. In principle, the same roles exist with small websites although just one or two people might perform them all.

This list is not exhaustive but will give you an idea of the range of skills involved.

Key Decision Makers

Someone in your organisation will need to approve budgets and staff resources. If you're not the key decision maker, you need to have them on board from the beginning. No matter how much work you put into the project, you will experience costly delays if the project is not a priority and decisions are delayed.

Digital Champions

These are the people in your organisation who always come up with ideas for improving your processes and creating online ideas for your business. They may spend a lot of their own time on the Internet and understand how it works. They will be enthusiastic participants and could be valuable for selling website benefits to your staff.

Project Manager

There should be one person in your organisation designated as the key contact for all third parties involved in the process (web developer, consultant, designers, software vendors, suppliers, etc).

The project manager will ensure that communication is passed to and from the correct people and will hold responsibility for meeting project time frames and deadlines.

Content Providers

These people will be the subject matter experts (SME) for the various content areas of your website. They will be the gatekeepers of specific departmental information, understand the steps involved in performing a business process, and know the exact components of your products or services.

Team Leaders

In a large organisation, you may wish to appoint a team leader within each department. They will be responsible for compiling information from their area and communicating between the content providers and the project manager.

Web Master

The web master will be the person who maintains the website after it is launched. They should be involved from the beginning of the project, so that they understand the history and structure of the website.
