Website Lifecycle Diagram (resource selection phase)

Resource Selection Phase

What happens

You make significant decisions about what resources to commit to your website and
choose suppliers including your web development company.

What to aim for

The answers to questions such as

  • who will build your website?
  • how long will your website take to build?
  • who will host your website?
  • approximately how much will your website cost?
  • how much will support, hosting and software cost?
  • what new technical infrastructure will you need?
  • how will you keep your website content up to date?
  • what extra work will your website create for your staff?

Key concepts

Web development companies will be able to answer many of your questions by referring to the documentation you created in the previous phase.

Don't assume that the first web company you meet will be the right one. They have a wide range of capabilities. You can also expect their quotations to vary widely for reasons that include the technology they use and the professionalism of their work.

Be prepared to discover that the process of building your website will require more work and take longer than you thought. Again, this is something to explore with web companies.

Remember to consider human resources. Many organisations underestimate what's going to be involved in areas like training staff and managing their websites after launch.

Compromises and trade-offs are common. For example, you might need to revisit your website requirements and change them to fit your budget.
